2. Outside Wing Satin Stitch & Wing Vein Detailing

Butterfly Body
1. Antenna
2. Wing position stitching
3. Wing tack down stitching
4. Body (stitches on top of wings)

Directions

1. Stitch the butterfly wings first. Suitable materials are: one or two layers of silk organza or cotton organdy. Very wide sparkle tulle ribbon, very crisp polyester sparkle organza and multiple layers of bridal tulle can also be used. You do not need to use stabilizer, but if you choose to do so, use a water soluble stabilizer.
2. Cut out the wings using very sharp, curved bladed scissors. (Embroidery Nips from www.tools-gadgets.com work perfectly for this)
3. Stitch the first color, Antenna, on your project fabric. This color should match the body color, and you can use the same color for all four steps if you wish.
4. Stitch the second color, Wing position stitching.
5. Place the cut-out butterfly wings over the Wing position stitching, centering the wings over the stitching line. The stitching line should not extend above the top center portion of the wings or below the bottom center portion of the wings. A tiny bit of temporary spray adhesive on the back of the wings helps to hold them in place before the next stitching sequence.
6. Stitch the Wing tack down stitching line. If you are happy with where the wings are positioned, complete the butterfly by stitching the final stitch sequence, the body.
